LATE AGAIN!

This week’s lab work revolved around the extraction of DNA from six of our twenty-six assigned strains. We began by discussing how to extract DNA from our sample cells. The class used the DNA filtration method coupled with centrifuging in order to collect pure DNA. A DNA extraction kit with guidelines on how to perform the extraction was provided. The second lab involved continuing to examine the DNA. Each group made an agrose gel to run their DNA with. Using the number three marker, we loaded our DNA into the gels and began the electrophoresis. While the gels ran we observed our dilution plates of irradiated and regular soil from LRH-03-1 being careful to note the differences between the samples. Our last activity of the week was taking a picture of the gel under UV to show our DNA bands and a group discussion of each picture.
